On patenting AppStore apps

Lot of rant on the Internet about how apple patents AppStore apps.

Firstly, if you don’t have patience to read the full patent text, then none of the blog posts are going to make any sense really.

Secondly, what’s up with the fellow developers. You feel happy when your app gets showcased for free on those tv ads. And when we include it for illustration purpose on a patent, you all rant about it? Seriously, if you can’t understand apple, you ain’t know apple.

We believe an integrated travel app that can talk your airline, hotel, travel agency in one interface with partly automated logic is cool. If you feel there is a prior art for this invention then follow the rules and prove it. Ranting doesn’t look professional.

Why Bing?

Apparently, there are few speculations regarding bing option in iOS. I even called it as cool during WWDC. Contrary to the speculation that we got a cheque from MS to include Bing, it was infact one of the highly requested feature.

Yes, we always read feedbacks submitted, open letters in tuaw and other blogs etc. One thing we are so bad at is to blog and self advertise how cool our technologies are. (Hope this blog acts as a good starting point).

And we still think Bing is cool. Looks like Powerset integration with MS is finally paying off, with a quality product from them. Its good to have options on hand isn’t it?

Lucky no one is blaming apple

When AT&T and O2 UK announced that they will no longer provide unlimited data (after an offer period), the first thing I told myself was “oh fuck”.

Why? This blogging atmosphere would come up with a theory that we are doing something to prevent chrome os from succeeding. Remember, chrome os is near dead without Internet. Even things like printing requires data connection. (by the way, Phil is hard at work trying to crack the printing problem in iPad. I rejected his last design :))

Apple has nothing to do with this. We will however work with the operators to get the best mobile experience for our customers.

Are we afraid of killer apps?

Just came across a nice theory here. Can’t help laughing.

The greatest support for my thesis is that there are not yet any third party companies that have made a huge amount of money on the iPhone. Has there been success? Yes. Has there been enough to support a major exit, or to even put someone on that trajectory?

On top of my head, I can remember couple of apps which Google bought and killed. (I can call that as Google being afraid of AppStore!)

Ok, apparently the author thinks majority apps on AppStore are crap. Hmm, so other competition has only great quality apps is it? Have you installed all 15K odd apps on your android phone?

I would recommend reading this excellent post on Augmented Reality in RWweb. Apple currently doesn’t have plans to get into the AR segment. The whole point of us adding gyroscope and quality screen in iPhone 4 is to provide a platform with power to allow people to innovate like never before.

Guess what? The easiest thing in the world is to comment on other’s product than coming up with a own.

Moving away from John Appleseed

Here is a tip to all our blogger friends. We are moving away from John Appleseed.

We use John Appleseed as the default name in a number of our demo’s and as default values for example in mail app. But one of our core value is at stake, when John Appleseed is getting used as a marketing word to showcase iOS apps, instead of iDevice!

If people had paid careful attention to WWDC 2010, they would have seen my name (Steve Jobs) and my email, in mail app and even in iAd. However, this doesn’t mean all devices will carry my name as default :)

Just thought of letting you all know that this is just a start.
